Iowa American seeks 19 percent rate increase

CLINTON — Iowa American Water is asking the Iowa Utilities Board for an increase in water rates.

Letters were distributed to customers this week alerting residents of the proposed rate hike of an average 19.4 percent for residential customers.

The proposed effective date would be May 29. Annual revenue from the rate hikes would be approximately $6.44 million.

According to Iowa American Water, the company is asking for rate hikes because of ongoing infrastructure investments, rising expenses related to water treatment and delivery systems, and increased operating costs.

The increase would take a typical bill of 4,200 gallons per month from $31.59 to $37.72.

Iowa American Water President Randy Moore said the added price will contribute to proactive water system upgrades.

“By continually improving our water systems, we help reduce the frequency of service interruptions, prevent property damage from water main breaks and enhance fire protection,” Moore said.

The Iowa Utilities Board will investigate the rate increases. Before a final decision is made, Iowa American Water will place an interim 8.39 percent rate hike on residents effective May 10.

Iowa American Water raised rates in 2009 and 2011. Like in previous years, customers can voice their concerns with the rate increases. Customers can file a written comment or objection to the Iowa Utilities Board, 1375 E. court Ave., room 69, Des Moines. Also, comments may be submitted to customer@iub.iowa.gov or by using the comment form at Iub.iowa.gov.

A comment meeting also will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at the Clinton Moose Lodge, 1936 Lincoln Way.
