Liberty Avenue could become Veterans Memorial Drive

CLINTON — Honoring local veterans by renaming one of Clinton’s most traveled stretches of road gained unanimous support from a city of Clinton committee Wednesday.

Clinton resident Bob Soesbe asked the City Services Committee to consider changing the name of Liberty Avenue to Veterans Memorial Drive, although he said he was open to changing the last part of the name.

“For a long time I’ve thought we need to have something in Clinton that honors living veterans,” Soesbe said.

The memorial on the riverfront at Fifth Avenue South honors veterans who have died or gone missing in action and is mostly Clinton County as opposed to Clinton veterans, he explained.

“Most of the bigger cities have some sort of memorial drive,” Ward 3 Councilwoman Bev Hermann said. “That’s a good place and the name, “Veterans Memorial Drive” ties right in with Liberty Square.”

While changing a street name can be burdensome for roadways lined with businesses or homes, Liberty Avenue is a clean slate.

“There’s no addresses here yet, how could anybody object?” Soesbe asked.

The street would start at South 14th Street and run north along the stretch of road, but city staff members have to determine where the end point for Veterans Memorial would be.

Soebse proposed the city place a row of flags and other landscaping appropriate for a road honoring veterans on the east side where there will never be any businesses. He suggested the city could seek flag pole and flag donations from local groups.

Soesbe also asked that a committee or task force be formed to monitor the landscaping.

The motion to change the name will move forward to the next Committee of the Whole meeting while city staff members will research forming a task force.
