Top dog: Clinton canine will be honorary dog at event

CLINTON — A Clinton canine will be the honorary dog at this year’s American Cancer Society’s Bark for Life fundraiser in Davenport.

Deker, owned and handled by Lois Hall of Clinton, will be the ambassador for this year’s event at 9 a.m. Sept. 4 at Centennial Park in Davenport.

Deker, an 8-year-old Collie, serves in many roles including Search and Rescue Dog with Emergency K-9 Operations, Inc. Search and Rescue team, K-9 Deputy with the Clinton County Sheriff’s office, and Therapy Dog with Clinton County Emergency Management CERT Therapy Dog Outreach program. Deker provides support to cancer survivors through his therapy dog visits at local health care facilities as well as the Ronald McDonald House and Hope Lodge in Iowa City.

Bark For Life adds a twist to the society’s traditional Relay For Life event, serving as a fundraising activity to honor the care-giving qualities of canine companions while supporting the mission of the American Cancer Society.

“Many pet owners consider their dogs a part of their family, especially those furry friends who lend a great amount of comfort and support during a loved one’s cancer battle,” American Cancer Society Senior Consultant Mary Schenck said. “Bark For Life is the canine counterpart to Relay For Life, a very family friendly movement that celebrates our canine caregivers, just as we honor other family members who support their loved ones who are fighting cancer during Relay For Life.”

Registration fee is $10 for the event, and the event will feature canine service booths, service dog demonstrations, Top Dog fundraising contest and a best dressed dog contest.
