Courts: Sentence delayed on woman

Devries pleaded guilty to meth charges

CLINTON — A Clinton woman will wait another week to find out if she will serve time in prison for meth-related charges.

Daffiney Devries, 33, was in Clinton County District Court on Thursday for her sentencing hearing on three charges that stemmed from meth being made in her home.

Devries pleaded guilty last month to aiding and abbetting the conspiracy to manufacture meth, possession of meth precursors and child endangerment. Devries admitted that between March 1 and June 4, she allowed her ex-husband, Jason Devries, to manufacture meth in the home in which her 4-year-old child lived. She also admitted to possessing pseudoephedrine for the purpose of manufacturing meth.

Devries’s attorney Bruce Ingham asked Judge Thomas Reidel to give Devries probation and suspend any prison time.

“We recognize that with the facts of this case and the history of Ms. Devries, asking for probation is perhaps a stretch, but we believe that the facts and the case and the cooperation Ms. Devries has provided to law enforcement since her arrest on this charge merit serious consideration by this court,” Ingham said.

Clinton police Sgt. Ron Heeren testified that Devries has helped identify a “significant” number of individuals that might result in further investigations and would not have come to fruition without Devries’s help.

Despite the request and Heeren’s testimony, Reidel questioned if the court had the authority to grant probation based on Devries’s past conviction.

Ingham asked for a week extension to review the statutes that dictate the potential mandatory minimum sentence. Assistant Clinton County Attorney Robin Strausser did not object.
