Six running for four seats on Clinton School Board

CLINTON — Final papers for the upcoming Clinton School Board elections have been filed and three new challengers will be taking on the incumbents running for re-election.

Current school board vice president Missey Sullivan-Pope is one of three incumbents who will run for another term on the board.

“The direction that our school is going, I don’t think we can be at a better place and I decided now would not be a good time to step down,” Sullivan-Pope said. “There’s a lot of positive things going on at our schools.”

The other two running along side of Sullivan-Pope will be board member Jack Wenzel and school board president Gregg Obren.

Wenzel’s desire to run for a second term stems from having two kids at Clinton High School and the work he has already been involved with during his first term.

“I’ve enjoyed the last four years and I think I’ve done a good job. I would like another four years to accomplish all that I have yet to accomplish,” Wenzel said.

The incumbents’ competitors for the four available positions are Eric Gettes, Dana Evers and Unice Schexnyder-Short.

Gettes is a 33-year resident of Clinton who currently works in special education in the Riverdale School District in Port Byron, Ill., and is excited for the opportunity to join the school board.

“It’s something that I’ve always been interested in doing. I’m very interested in education and making the schools a better place for our students and teachers,” Gettes said.

Evers also has a solid background in education and feels now that she has retired from the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency, there is nothing holding her back from joining the Clinton School Board.

“I retired just a couple years ago from AEA and I felt that may have been a conflict of interest,” Evers said. “It’s been a (while) now so I felt it was time to get involved.”

A vote on Sept. 10 will decide who will fill the four available positions.

“I have a lot of respect for all of the other candidates and I think we all have an equal chance,” Gettes said.
