Irish's Evers advances to district golf meet

CALAMUS — Connor Evers is looking to settle the score at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City.

A year ago, the Prince of Peace golfer missed a trip to the boys golf state tournament by one stroke playing at Pleasant Valley. He earned a shot at redemption Friday by placing third at the Iowa Class 1A Calamus Sectional Tournament at Wapsie Oaks Golf Course. The top-four finish allowed him to advance to Thursday’s district meet at Pleasant Valley.

“I was very, very happy,” Evers said of his round. He shot an 83 on Friday, then lost a playoff with Lisbon’s Nic Johnson for second place in the sectional meet.

Lisbon won the team title with a 349-stroke total, while host Calamus-Wheatland was second with a 359. Because the host school finished in the top two, Marquette Catholic also earned a trip to the district meet with a 364. Isaac Sturm led the Mohawks by placing fourth individually with an 86.

Austin Rickertsen of Calamus-Wheatland was the meet medalist. He made eight pars and finished with an 82.

Evers turned his game around for the second trip on the nine-hole layout. He shot a 45 on the front nine but whittled that to a 38 the second time through.

“I knew if I wanted to go on to the district meet I needed to shoot a solid score on the back nine,” he said. “I played better and learned some things (the first time through the course).”

Evers kicked off the second nine with a par 4.

“I was in a very good mood; I knew I could shoot something good after that,” Evers said of the hole.

He bogeyed No. 11 and then parred No. 12. After a bogey-5 on No. 13, Evers parred the next three holes, then birdied the par-5 17th hole.

“My drive was straight down the middle, my second shot went a little right and was 100 yards out,” he said. “Then, I hit a 58-degree wedge within 10 feet and putted in.”

The only rough hole on his second nine was the last one, where he had a double-bogey 6.

“I chunked a shot short of the green on 18 and sort of messed up from there,” he said.

Evers said all the recent rain made the course soft, “but that doesn’t really affect me,” he said.
