Clean play key for Camanche

CLINTON — CLINTON — In her first year, Camanche softball coach Erin Schlotfeldt said it's a relief having a team that makes few mistakes and capitalizes on opponent miscues.

"They all have a softball background," Schlotfeldt said. "They do a really good job of knowing what to do in what situations. Those are things I don't have to coach, which makes my job a lot easier."

On Friday, both Clinton and Camanche earned two runs each over six innings. Through three innings, the game looked as if it might be a pitchers' duel, with River Queen Halee Vicks and Indian Morgan Mussmann eying shutouts.

The difference came with the Indians' ability to take advantage when their opponent faltered. Camanche played errorless ball, while Clinton made four errors in a loss 4-2.

"We made some costly errors, and it happened to be when runners were on," Clinton coach Trina Cewe said. "They have a quick team, so they took advantage of it just like any team should."

In the top of the third, Kylie Vogel and Julia Moore teamed to drive in both of Camanche's earned runs. Another miscue allowed the Indians to build a three-run lead heading into the dugout.

Clinton answered in the bottom half with two runs after freshman Taylor Altemeier smacked a double to left-center to bring in sisters Kierstyn and Sydney Davis. With the score at 3-2, Clinton still remained within striking distance, not allowing another run over the next three innings.

But in the seventh, Camanche, again, padded its lead on account of a Clinton throwing error. Second baseman Sydney Davis tried to turn two on a sacrifice bunt play, forcing out the runner at first. Her throw to second was wide left, allowing the Camanche runner to score all the way from first base on the play.

In the bottom half, Camanche pitcher Allie Lefebure went three up, three down, to close out the win. The Indians are 1-0 on the season, while Clinton dropped to 0-2.

"I just wanted the girls to come out and play hard," Schlotfeldt said. "I know we have a very athletic team. They lived up to the expectations I had for them. ... It gives the girls a ton of confidence."
