MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS: Karen and Doreen Vroman

CLINTON — A mother-daughter duo will be showing their creations at the River Arts Center’s “Art at the Crossroads” show.

Growing up in Erie, Ill., Doreen Vroman remembers being surrounded by the art of her mother, Karen Vroman. She took art classes from her mother. During her summers, they would go to art fairs.

“And I got to see a lot of art at the art fairs growing up and I grew to appreciate it,” Doreen said.

Karen grew up in Prophetstown, Ill., and majored in art at Illinois State University. Karen has taught art workshops for various organizations in both Illinois and Iowa since 1964.

“It’s something that you never retire from. It’s just what you do,” Karen said. “You keep noticing things and before you get one painting finished, you’re thinking about the next. There’s always something that excites you.”

One of Karen’s passions is flowers. Her flower garden at home provides subjects for her watercolors.

This passion for nature has rubbed off on her daughter. Doreen paints primarily nature and pets. The three pieces she has entered in the River Arts Center exhibit — a centennial celebration for US 30/67 — feature the river.

“There’s something relaxing about being near the water. I enjoy looking at like the reflections of trees in water and the way the sun reflects in water,” Doreen said.

Karen said it is great to see her daughter so involved in art. Her other daughter, Renee, is also artistic, spending her time quilting.

Karen also helps her mother out at her home gallery, Added Touch Gallery, at 8549 Spring Hill Road, Erie, Ill. The gallery is open by appointment by calling (309) 659-2851. Karen’s husband, Robert, even takes part in her art, framing and matting her pieces.

The “Art at the Crossroads” show will run until July 28 at the River Arts Center, 229 Fifth Ave. South. The gallery is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and by appointment.
