Klompen all around: Dutch Days kicks off on Friday

FULTON, Ill. — Dutch Days will once again showcase the heritage of the Dutch this weekend, and this year organizers are focusing on church history.

Dutch Days festivities will be from Friday to Sunday, with the majority of programs and activities planned for Friday and Saturday. This year's theme is "Churches: Steeped in History."

One of the featured speakers will be a former Fulton High School graduate. The Rev. Carol Bechtel is a professor of Old Testament at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Mich. She received her Ph.D in Old Testament from Yale University in 1992, and she will speak about the theme of churches at 2:30 p.m. Friday and 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Masonic Lodge.

Several local churches have submitted histories of their churches and will participate in the parade. A musical program, “Old Church Music,” will be presented by local musicians Marguerite Clark and Maurice Rogers. Their performance will include hymns through the ages, such as “Precious Lord” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Clark has been a church organist for more than 50 years. Rogers is a retired band director in the River Bend School District. This musical entertainment will be on stage at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Another program of note includes a screening of a video about Fulton. The video was filmed in 1953 as part of a series highlighting area communities. The 55-minute video covers several businesses, along with churches, schools and a narration of the history of Fulton. The video will be shown at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Masonic Lodge.

Two showings also will be at 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Fulton (Martin House) Museum. Copies will be for sale at all showings.

Heritage Canyon will be open to the public during the three days of the festival. Several food vendors, activities, displays and programs will be available throughout Friday and Saturday, with the parade scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday.

Dutch dancing and costumes will be part of the annual ceremony, which is celebrating its 39th year.

A full schedule of events is available in the Clinton Herald.
