Jail escapee pleads guilty

CLINTON — A man who escaped from the Clinton County jail on April 6 will spend as much as 10 years in prison.

Kendrell Keith, 18, pleaded guilty Thursday to the escape and the second-degree theft charge that put him in jail. Each charge is a class D felony, carrying up to five years in the Iowa Department of Corrections and a fine of between $750 and $7,500.

Keith admitted that on March 30 he took a vehicle valued at more than $1,000 that did not belong to him. Keith and Kyle Julian, 18, escaped from the county jail at 4:40 p.m. April 6. Clinton County Sheriff’s deputies captured Keith later that day at 11:49 p.m. in the 1500 block of Camanche Avenue.

Julian was caught at 12:20 a.m. April 8 in a vehicle on U.S. 30 just west of Lowden in Cedar County. He pleaded guilty to escaping custody on May 10 and was ordered to serve as much as five years in prison. His probation on two previous felony charges also were revoked.

Keith requested immediate sentencing Thursday. His defense attorney, Harry DeLange told the court that Keith wanted to apologize to the court and the jail staff for his actions. He added that his client realizes escaping was a foolish thing to do.

Judge Gary McKenrick ordered him to serve five years in prison for each charge and fined him $750 for each. The fines were suspended.

Keith’s probation was revoked on charges of third-degree theft, possession of marijuana, fifth-degree theft and operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent. These sentences with be served concurrently with each other and the one for second-degree theft.

The sentence for the escape will run consecutively.
