Students honored at ceremony

CLINTON — Seventy-four students from Clinton High School’s class of 2013 were honored Thursday during the 27th annual senior honors convocation.

The class of 2013 has taken more Advanced Placement tests and has earned some of the highest scores on the ACT and Iowa Assessments than any other class, CHS Principal Karinne Tharaldson Jones told the friends and family members that gathered to celebrate in the Vernon Cook Theater.

“Just so you know parents and grandparents, these are very bright kids, don’t let them fool you. They need to be successful. They are great kids and I am just amazed at some of the things they have already done. I’m anticipating a lot of the great things this particular class will do,” she said.

Scholarships were awarded for academic, service, athletic and other achievements to aid students in their continued success. Students also were honored for being members of the 3.0 club.

CHS students must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher for the third trimester of last year and the first two trimesters of this school year to be in the club.

Senior class president Jacob Kruse shared that a new sign for the main entrance to Clinton High School as the senior gift. Tharaldson Jones said the gift will be a great help next year as CHS will welcome guests through the main entrance only, rather than through the commons.

“Thank you to the class for helping us provide the opportunity to show people this is the main entrance to the building and to put a nice sign out there this is really a welcome addition to our building,” she said.

Tharaldson Jones ended the ceremony by carrying on her tradition: reading a poem she wrote for the departing class.

“Our River Queens and River Kings, you did it. You made it. It’s time to realize your dreams,” she said.

CHS commencement will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, in Yourd Gymnasium at CHS.
