Clinton's United Way kicks off

CLINTON — The United Way of Clinton County is hoping to raise $620,000 for area programs.

“While we live in an area of great plenty, we can just look around ourselves and see people with great needs,” said Assistant Campaign Chairman Mark Ohnemus, before Thursday’s kick-off event at Wild Rose Casino and Resort.

United Way of Clinton County Board President Tom Moser welcomed more than 60 participants to a kick-off and training luncheon. Those in attendance included representatives from local agencies, business and industry contacts, and United Way volunteers. Moser thanked them all for their “willingness to get the message out” about United Way’s fundraising campaign.

Each year, the United Way raises funds to locally address community needs, focusing on both long-term and short-term education, income and health concerns. Campaign Chairman Travis Flatten said United Way partners with local groups, supporting individual programs that benefit the community

“We make sure the money goes to good use,” Flatten said.

Flatten spoke to those in attendance about ways to increase the amount of contributions the campaign receives between now and the end of the year. This included increasing employees participation in campaigns held at businesses and new ways of approaching those who might contribute.

Last year, the campaign reached 103 percent of its goal, totaling $625,000. However, Executive Director Cheryl McCulloh said in a press release, that each year, agencies request nearly $100,000 more than what is raised.

“Each gift, no matter the size, is combined with others so we can make a bigger impact than any of us can on our own,” McCulloh said. “Please give generously this year.”
