CLINTON — As the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre’s 2013 season is nearing its end, the group is looking toward the next season as one full of classics.
Patrons attended Tuesday night’s “Follies” to learn what productions will be on the roster of the 2014 season. The various shows were revealed throughout a night filled with songs, both well-known and unfamiliar.
Artistic Director Tommy Iafrate considers this season to have been a great one. As patrons waited patiently for the 2014 season to be revealed, he told them that “The Sound of Music” was the third best selling show in Showboat history. The first and second were “Mame” in 2002 and “The Music Man” in 2001.
Iafrate said all of the shows in the 2014 season have a classical aspect, whether it be based off classic tales, contain classic period music or be favorite old musicals. Another common thread is they are all family oriented.
“With the success of the 2013 opener, “Forever Plaid,” Iafrate decide to continue on that same style, with “The Taffetas” opening the 2014 season. This musical features the story of four sisters in the 1950s who are making their big television debut. The show features real hits, such as “Mr. Sandman,” “Lollipop” and “Life Can Be a dream.”
“Annie Get Your Gun” will appear as the second show in the 2014 season. This musical tells the story of Annie Oakley and Frank Butler fighting and falling in love in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. The third show in the 2014 will be the well-known musical, “The Wizard of Oz.”
“Wonderful Town” will be the fourth musical in the season, telling the story of two sisters from Ohio – an actress and a writer – who move to New York. The final production will be an adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland.” Iafrate said this classic story is a coming-of-age tale about a “little girl becoming a lady.”
Between performances, Iafrate displayed the theater’s new logo and highlighted shows still to come in 2013. “A Christmas Carol” will be performed as the Christmas show. The theater interns will be performing “School House Rock” on Aug. 10 and 11.
