Man charged with 60 counts of sexual exploitation

CLINTON — Two Clinton residents are facing felony charges in connection with the alleged sexual exploitation of a child.

Jason Boutwell, 33, 435 Eighth Ave. South, is charged with seven counts of second-degree sexual abuse and 60 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. According to charges filed against him, the state claims that between February 2006 and January 2012, he performed sex acts with a child younger than the age of 12.

Boutwell also allegedly exploited this child between the same time period. According to Iowa Criminal Code 728.12 (1), exploitation of a minor is when a person does willingly: "employ, use, persuade, induce, entice, coerce, solicit, knowingly permit, or otherwise cause or attempt to cause a minor to engage in a prohibited sexual act or in the simulation of a prohibited sexual act." This person must know or intend for this act or simulated act to be photographed, filmed, or otherwise preserved.

Trishia Piantieri, 32, 336 Third Ave. North, is charged with second-degree sexual abuse. According to charges filed by the state, she is accused of unlawfully and willfully aiding and abetting the performance of a sex act with a child younger than 12, between February 2006 and January 2012.

The court affidavit for each defendant is sealed due to the nature of the offense. Assistant County Attorney Ross Barlow confirmed that all charges are in connection with one child, but was unable to give any additional information about the case.

Both defendants are being held in the Clinton County jail on $25,000 cash bonds. Boutwell's arraignment is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 25. Piantieri's preliminary hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The sexual abuse charges are class B felonies, carrying as much as 25 years in prison each. As class C felonies, each of the exploitation charges carry as much as 10 years in prison and a fine of between $1,000 and $10,000.
