UPDATE: Released safety valves causes loud noise near ADM

CLINTON — UPDATE: Clinton residents may have heard a loud noise this morning caused by a power outage at Archer Daniels Midland.

ADM Media Relations Representative David Weintraub confirmed this morning that electrical service to the corn processing complex was interrupted when a low-voltage power line fell on the major power line for the plant. Clinton Police are investigating the collision of a grain truck with a utility pole.

Police Capt. Bill Greenwalt confirmed this morning that emergency communications received a report from ADM representatives at 5:26 a.m. about a transformer exploding behind Super 8. Upon investigation at the scene, officers found that a utility pole was severed at the base.

Weintraub added that the loud noise occurred when a "number of safety valves released at once, exactly as they're designed to do when something like this happens," in response to the outage.

No injuries were reported and no equipment was damaged by the outage.

"Again, this was an example of safety systems working as designed," Weintraub said.

As of this morning, ADM is at a limited production, but Weintraub expects the plant to resume normal production later today, once the power is fully restored.
