---- — CLINTON — Area Lutherans will complete various service projects this weekend to celebrate 25 years for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.

“We do wonderful work in the world; wonderful services,” St. Paul Lutheran’s Pastor Elizabeth Liggett said.

Many Lutheran congregations will celebrate the anniversary on Sunday. Immanuel Lutheran, Chancy Lutheran, St. Paul Lutheran and Zion Lutheran will join together at the Riverview Park Bandshell to share a meal and worship. Participants will then break up to volunteer for one of four service projects.

“We wanted a mixture,” Liggett said. “We wanted hands on. And we wanted local things as well as more than local.”

Some of the volunteers will pick up trash at a local park, while others will stay at the bandshell and assemble personal care kits to be sent around the world through Lutheran World Relief. A total of 200 bath towels from Thrivent will be used for the personal care kits.

Another group will visit the Associate Benevolent Society. Executive Director Paula Mallory will take the group on a tour of the building, explaining the organization’s services. Volunteers may fold clothes, water exterior plants and clean windows.

Mallory is happy to have the group coming to the society.

“Anytime you can get more people to know what’s going on in the community, the more support you receive,” Mallory said.

A final group will volunteer for an hour at the Bickelhaupt Arboretum or the Freedom Trees site. They will perform yard work at the sites.

Liggett said the members of the Lutheran churches are happy to roll up their sleeves and volunteer in the community.

“And we believe that God works through our hands,” Liggett said.

The event will begin at noon. Participants are asked to bring a can of food, as well as any personal care items, such as soap, toothbrushes, combs and nail clippers.
