Clinton School Board approves new president

CLINTON — The Clinton School Board has a new president following a four to two vote by members Monday.

The board at its regular meeting elected Gregg Obren the new board president in place of former president Jim McGraw.

Obren was nominated by fellow board member Devin Guillory.  After board member Jack Wenzel nominated McGraw, board members voted by ballot with Obren emerging as the president.

The board also elected a new vice president, Missey Sullivan Pope. The vote to elect Sullivan Pope, who will take the position in place of Mercia Wolf, was unanimous, with Wolf absent.

The reorganization of the board takes place every year, with board members being elected by the public every other.

The board also accepted the retirement of School District Chief Financial Officer Jan Culbertson, effective at the end of March 2013.

Culbertson started with the Clinton School District in February 2010, a month after administrators announced an investigation into a serious financial irregularity in the district’s budget.  That irregularity was ultimately found to be a $1.2 million embezzlement by the district’s former assistant business manager.

Since joining the district, Culbertson made numerous changes to the district’s finance office.  She instituted tighter controls, altered workflows to allow for more checks and balances with the district finances and now provides the district with monthly financial reports.

The search for Culbertson’s replacement will begin immediately.
