Businesses vie for $5,000 prize

CLINTON — Two Clinton businesses are vying for a $5,000 prize that would be used to grow downtown Clinton.

Deja Vu and the Painted Rooster are among 11 businesses entered in the Quad-Cities regional competition of the Dream Big Grow Here contest, which gives Iowans a chance to win $5,000 for their business or business idea.

The winner of the regional competition will move on to the state competition to compete for a $10,000 prize.

Lou Ray, co-owner of Deja Vu would use the money to place a large lighted sign to place on the river-facing side of her building at the corner of Fifth Avenue South and First Street. The sign would promote her business and downtown Clinton so the thousands of people who cross the U.S. 30 bridge everyday would see it and come to Clinton's downtown.

"I want people to come off the 30 bridge and go right," Ray said. "That bridge is the gateway to Iowa and I would love to promote downtown."

Erin George entered the contest on behalf of the Painted Rooster.

If the Painted Rooster won the money, it would be used as seed money to purchase and remodel another potential downtown Clinton business.

Businesses had until Friday to enter the Quad-Cities contest.

Voting runs from Monday until 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25. The four dreams that receive the most votes will have 10 minutes to pitch their dreams to a panel of business experts in December. From one to four wildcard dreams will be selected by the regional host to compete in the pitch-off.

To vote, visit www.dreambiggrwohere.com, click on vote, select the Quad Cities 2013 option from the drop down menu and choose a a business. People can vote once a day for the entire two weeks voting is open.
