Tax-free weekend set

CLINTON — Clinton stores will stock shelves, bulk schedules and add sales in anticipation of this year’s tax-free weekend.

Iowa’s 14th annual sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday and runs through midnight Saturday.

Most shoes and clothing items less than $100 will be exempt from taxes on those two days. Any item $100 or more will be taxed.

The chance to put more in their closets without giving more to government draws big crowds to both national chains and local stores in Clinton, which is already a regional retail center.

“It’s been very successful for us,” Boegel’s co-owner Bobbi Scherer said. “It gets really busy. It’s always nice for people to be able to save that money.”

The exemption applies to both the state tax of 5 percent and the local option sales tax, giving people more incentive to add to their wardrobe.

“We are expecting a really big couple days,” said Amy Clausen, a senior team lead with Target in Clinton.

To prepare, the store has added cashier shifts and increased the amount of basics like T-shirts and underwear on hand.

The tax-free weekend started in 1999 to give families a break on back-to-school shopping, but its not just school kids and their parents hitting the stores as the tax-break applies to more than just new school clothes.

“We do see an influx of families in the store shopping together,” Clausen said. “But I’m sure there are other people who take advantage of it. Who wouldn’t?”

Scherer said her store also plans to run sales during the weekend to give shoppers even more for their money.

“It’s like bonus, bonus,” she said.

The Iowa Department of Revenue says that watches, watchbands, jewelry, umbrellas, handkerchiefs, sporting equipment, skis, swim fins, in-line skates and any special clothing or footwear designed primarily for athletic activity or protective use and not usually considered appropriate for everyday wear will be taxed.
