Second-quarter surge sends Knights past Kings

CLINTON — For one quarter, things didn’t look too bad for the Clinton River Kings against top-ranked Davenport Assumption.

Jalen Jones was fouled on a dunk attempt and made a free throw, minutes later he turned a rebound into a three-point play, and when Brady Ernst scored on a drive, the River Kings were within a point of Assumption to end the period.

Then Assumption’s Matt Vonderhaar went to work. Next came Billy Daniel. Nick Schebler was the next wave, and when he was done, Assumption was sitting on a 13-point lead.

It got no better the rest of the night for the River Kings, as they dropped a 72-36 Mississippi Athletic Conference boys basketball game at W.J. Yourd Gymnasium and fell to 2-5, 0-3 in the conference.

Vonderhaar finished with 21 points, Schebler added 12 and Daniel scored 11 as Assumption, ranked No. 1 in the Iowa AP‚ÄąClass 3A poll, improved to 3-2, 2-1 in the MAC.

Clinging to an 11-10 lead after the first quarter, Assumption went to work quickly in the second quarter.

Vonderhaar, a 6-foot-4 senior guard, opened the quarter with a 3-point basket from the right wing at the 7:40 mark. The River Kings got within 14-12 when Jon Cady controlled a long pass from Jones under the basket and scored, but Assumption came right back and found Vonderhaar under the basket for an easy score. Next, the Knights found Daniel down low, and he leaned in and scored for an 18-12 lead.

Daniel, a 6-5 senior, scored on a putback and added a free throw to make it 21-12.

Ernst put in a tip-in for Clinton, but then Assumption reeled off the next 10 points.

Schebler, whose free throw made it 22-14, did much of the damage. Next, he came up with a loose ball in the Clinton end, went the other way and was credited with the basket when Ernst was called for goaltending with 5:02 left. When he stuck in a 3-pointer from the right wing it was 27-14 with 4:26 remaining.

Then Vonderhaar finished the run with a pair of driving baskets to push the lead to 31-17.

It never got any better for the Kings, who trailed 35-20 at the half and 54-29 after three quarters.

Jones led the River Kings with 14 points, including a second-half jam, and Tyler Thacker was next with seven.

Clinton is back in action Tuesday at Bettendorf.
