Ashford’s Gillespie earns national honor

Herald Staff Report

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ashford senior outfielder Jamie Gillespie, who had a career in one doubleheader last week and then continued her hot hitting, was named NAIA Softball Player of the Week for April 13-19.

Gillespie, from Davenport, batted .455 with a 1.182 slugging percentage last week. In six games, she went 10-for-22 with five home runs, a double, 18 runs batted in and eight runs scored. Against Viterbo (Wis.), Gillespie hit two grand slams in one inning and had 10 RBIs to lead Ashford to its first win of the season. She followed that with two more home runs in the next game.

“I’m really proud of Jamie for what she accomplished — I’ve never seen that kind of performance before,” Ashford coach Kyle Yore said. “The power was a bit surprising because she’s a base hitter, but it’s something that she is capable of. She’s been an integral part of our offense all year, whether it’s pushing runs across, moving runners over or scoring runs.”

On the season, Gillespie is hitting .288 in 35 games. She leads the team in home runs (five), RBIs (19) and runs scored (21).

The national honor was Gillespie’s second award of the day Tuesday. She was named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Softball Player of the Week earlier in the morning.
