Ashford drops 2 on Senior Night

CLINTON — Ashford University’s baseball team was on the short end of a pair of high-scoring affairs on Senior Night as the Saints were defeated 16-10 and 12-5 by St. Ambrose University on Wednesday night at Alliant Energy Field.

Ashford dropped to 8-28 on the season, falling to 3-19 in Midwest Collegiate Conference play. The Fighting Bees moved to one game over .500 in league play, improving to 10-9.

“It was emotional seeing those guys leaving the program especially when we’re rebuilding and they’re a huge part of that rebuilding process,” Ashford baseball coach John Govek said. “I hope they take pride in future success of the program.”

Seniors Shawn Aubin, Brian Cummings, Scott Schmitt, Jake Steve, Tyler Sukut and were honored in a ceremony between the doubleheader, receiving high-fives from teammates emerging out of the dugout for one last time.

Both respective leadoff hitters powered high-charged offensive attacks. St. Ambrose’s Jeff Gauley hit for the cycle in game one while Ashford’s Jordan Wakeley continued to battle through a cracked rib to homer and score five times combined.

Cummings recorded hits in both games to extend his hitting streak to a career-best and school-record 18 games.
