Ashford’s Cummings homers, extends hitting streak to 23

WESTVILLE, Ind. — Ashford third baseman Brian Cummings of Clinton continued to terrorize opposing pitching in a four-game road trip in Indiana, slamming his seventh home run of the season as the Saints fell to Purdue-North Central 6-1 and 12-2 on Sunday in college baseball.

Cummings extended his hitting streak to 23 games and is hitting .443 on the season through 35 games. His home run was a solo shot in the sixth inning of Game 1, Ashford’s lone run of the game. Cummings added two singles in three plate appearances in Game 2 to keep his streak alive.

Ashford wrapped up its Indiana tour with a 2-2 mark, sweeping Indiana University-Northwest 14-3 and 8-2 on Saturday

The Saints conclude the regular-season schedule on Tuesday at William Penn.

MCC champion Davis, Boon lead women’s golf team to 3rd

DAVENPORT — Led by the tandem of two-time Midwest Collegiate Conference champion Jordan Davis (82) and freshman Brittany Boon (82), the Ashford women’s golf team placed third Saturday at the St. Ambrose Spring Invitational.

The Saints fired a team score of 365 at Emeis Golf Course, 16 shots back of tournament winner St. Ambrose in an eight-team field.

Davis and Boon tied for third individually, finishing four strokes behind medalist Kelly Jansen of St. Ambrose.

“I was pleased with how we played overall,” Ashford coach Josh Davis said. “We were hoping to edge Viterbo and Mount Mercy and finish somewhere in the middle.”

Ashford’s Kathryn House (96) tied for 28th, Lanna Bartko (105) ended in a three-way tie for 39th and Erica Clawson (112) finished in 47th.

Two school records fall in track and field meet at Loras

DUBUQUE — Two school records were set and five personal records went down as Ashford’s men’s and women’s track and field teams competed Saturday at the Loras Open yesterday.

“The weather made conditions less than ideal out there,” Ashford coach Tyson Graham said. “The slippery surface made the jumpers cautious, and they weren’t as aggressive as they would normally be for risk of injury. We saw three jumpers leave the field today from injuries.”

Freshman Laura Minertz finished fifth in the 100-meter dash, setting a personal record in the process at a time 13.07 seconds. Junior Kim Fabry was right behind her at 13.45, just shy of qualifying for the finals.

Minertz added a third-place effort in the 200-meter, clocking in at 27.06. Fabry recorded a third-place finish in the long jump (4.88m). Freshman Kelsey Schraeder bettered her previous mark in the javelin by nearly three meters (15.24m).

Pickens named MVP

for Ashford men’s basketball

Josh Pickens, one of three seniors on the team, was recognized by his peers as Ashford’s Most Valuable Player in men’s basketball at the team’s annual banquet Sunday.

Pickens was among the Midwest Collegiate Conference leaders in 3-point shooting (third) with 70 made.

“Coming down to the wire, we wanted the ball in Josh’s hands, and he did an outstanding job,” coach Andy Eberhart said.

Freshman Peter Tanzillo was selected as the team’s Most Improved Player. Tanzillo started 24 games and tied the school record for blocks in a single game, swatting eight shots against St. Ambrose on Jan. 21.

Clinton native and senior Jarret Mulholland was presented with the team award, given to the player who embodies effort, character and leadership.

The Saints finished with an 11-19 record, 5-11 in the MCC.
