Ashford baseball team falls to St. Ambrose

CLINTON — The Saint Ambrose University Fighting Bees with a 12-5 record proved why they are ranked 13th in the nation as they took a 12-0 decision from the Ashford Saints Wednesday afternoon at Alliant Energy Field.

The Ashford University Saints starting pitcher Jake Handzus held the Fighting Bees to just one hit, one walk, only two base runners and no runs in the first inning as the Saints showed a big improvement over the way they played the day before when they lost two games to Viterbo as they opened conference action.

The Saints got a couple of hits in the first inning, a pair of singles from Tyler Sukut and Shawn Aubin but Sukut was forced at second and Aubin was stranded on first as the Bees got out of the inning on a strike out and fly ball.

The Fighting Bees didn’t waist anytime in the second inning as they sent 12 batters to the plate, coming up with four runs on three hits to jump out to a 4-0 lead, as Casey Raisbeck led the team with a double in the inning with a couple of RBIs, along with two more hits and a pair of walks.

The Saints used six pitchers during the seven innings but the Fighting Bees continued to add to their lead as they scored two runs in the fourth, three more in the fifth and seventh. Their defense kept the Saints off the board and cut the game short to just seven innings on the 10-run rule.

The Saints had runners on base every inning except two and came up with a total of ten hits. Sukut led the team with two hits while Billy Becker had the only extra base hit, a double in the fourth inning, but just couldn’t put any runs on the board.
