McLain, Ryan repeat as all-area girls basketball first-teamers

CLINTON — A pair of repeat first-teamers headlines the Clinton Herald’s all-area girl’s basketball team in 2008.

Prince of Peace’s Lauren Ryan and Prophetstown’s Emily McLain have once again been named to the first team as well as Clinton’s Whitney Miller, Preston’s Tiffany Bormann, Morrison’s Jessica Scott, West Carroll’s Nia Calbreath and Central DeWitt’s Lindsay Smith.

Here is a closer look at the first-team selections, as well as the second- and third- team picks:

FIRST TEAM

Lauren Ryan has been selected to the first team the last three years in leading the Irish resurgence. Ryan, Prince of Peace’s all-time leading scorer, led the Irish to a Big East Conference title while scoring 14 points per contest and was named first team all-league.

McLain led Prophetstown to a 26-7 record while scoring 19.0 points per game. The 5 foot 6 senior drained a school record 51 3-pointers this year while averaging 5.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 4.3 steals per contest.

Miller was Clinton’s floor leader as the River Queens tallied a 14-9 record in 2008. The 5 foot 7 point guard was a second team all-Mississippi Athletic Conference selection after averaging nine points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals per game for the River Queens.

Tiffany Bormann was a force inside for Preston as she averaged a double double with 14.3 points and 11.0 rebounds per outing. The 6 foot 1 junior was a first team all-Big East selection.

Calbreath was unanimous first team all-Northwest Upstate Illini Conference pick after leading the Thunder with 18.7 points per game. The 5 foot 7 senior hit 61 percent of her shots on her way to scoring over 1,000 career points.

Scott was unanimous all-Three Rivers Conference first team selection after averaging 15 points and 6.5 rebounds per game as a senior.

Smith burst onto the local hardwood scene in November, leading the Sabers to the title at the River Queen Classic as a freshman. The 5 foot 10 forward averaged 14.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in leading the Central DeWitt resurgence.

SECOND TEAM

Clinton’s Carly Green was tabbed as a second team all-MAC after leading the River Queens in scoring and rebounding with 11 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.

Brooke Craig was the catalyst for the Prince of Peace transition game that led to a Big East Conference title. The 5 foot 5 junior tallied 11 points per game on her way to garnering first team all-league honors.

Bellevue Marquette’s Lyndsey Haxmeier repeats as a second team selection after another stellar season for the Mohawks. The first team all-Big East senior averaged 10.5 points and 1.8 steals per game.

Calamus-Wheatland’s Ashley O’Neill is also a repeat second team selection after being selected first team all-Big East for the Warriors. O’Neill averaged 12.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest while draining 41 3-pointers.

Prophetstown junior Taylor Gallentine teamed with McLain to form a potent scoring duo. Gallentine received first team all-TRAC honors after averaging 15.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game for the Lady Prophets.

Central DeWitt’s Michelle Green was the Sabers floor leader from her point guard spot. The 5 foot 5 senior was a first team all-WaMac East Division after averaging six points and four assists per game.

Camanche’s Casey Johnson was named second team all-Big East after leading the Indians in scoring and rebounding. Johnson scored nine points and pulled down three boards per game for the Indians.

THIRD TEAM

Clinton’s Ellen Russell averaged seven points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals per contest for the River Queens. For her efforts, the 5 foot 8 senior was named third team all-MAC.

Bellevue Marquette’s Miranda Heiar was tabbed as second team all-Big East selection as a junior. Heiar scored 10.8 points and grabbed 6.2 rebounds per contest for the Mohawks.

Northeast sophomore Whitney Rorah led the Rebels with 11.0 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game averages. The 5 foot 8 forward was a second team all-Big East pick.

Calamus-Wheatland’s Leah Goettsch averaged 12.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest for the Warriors on her way to earning second team all-Big East honors.

East Central’s Brittany Horst was also a second team all-Big East selection. The sophomore averaged 11.05 points, 2.85 rebounds, 2.75 assists and 2.25 steals per outing.

Erie’s Carissa Saad scored 10.5 points per game for the Cardinals on her way to earning second team all-TRAC honors. The junior showed her versatility by pulling down 5.4 rebounds and dishing out 3.8 assists per game.

Fulton’s Danielle Adams was tabbed as a second team all-Three Rivers Conference for her play in her senior season. Adams led the Steamers with a 9.3 points per game average and finished second with a 6.0 rebounds average.
