Each year at Christmas time, we urge our readers to shop local as they get ready for the gift-giving season.

Now we are urging that again, but for another reason.

Your head would have had to have been in the sand for the past few months to miss the fact that the nationwide recession is not only taking its toll on the banks and larger manufacturing companies, but on Main Ssreet as well.

No doubt our mom-and-pop niche businesses are experiencing the fallout of an economy where people are afraid to spend.

What we’re advocating is not a credit card spending spree — no need to make matters worse.

But what we want people to remember is that when it comes time to shop for daily necessities or that must-have gift, think about the small local businesses that line our main streets throughout the Gateway area.

There are a lot of neat little businesses around and we are sure many could use a steady stream of shoppers heading through their doors.

These businesses need our help to continue to be in business.

So make it a priority to think about what the area has to offer.

It really is an investment in our future.
