PRESTON — Eloise Lucille Stewart, age 99, of rural Preston, Iowa, died at 7:10 a.m. on Wednesday morning, September 2, 2009, at Clover Ridge Place in Maquoketa, Iowa.

A celebration of her life will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, September 5, 2009, from the First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Friday, September 4, 2009, from the Carson and Son Funeral and Cremation Services in Maquoketa, Iowa. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa.

Eloise Tabor Stewart was born April 22, 1910, to George Washington Tabor and Ella Ann Gilmore Tabor on the home farm north of Baldwin, IA. She was the youngest child of five.

Eloise began school in Baldwin and then attended school in Monmouth, IA. She graduated from Monmouth High School in 1925 and then attended Francis Shimer College in Mt. Carroll, IL. She completed her education at National College of Education in Evanston, IL.

After graduating, she taught kindergarten in Ankeny. On June 11, 1930, she married Willard Clark Stewart. They moved to Milwaukee, WI, where Willard worked as a chemist. Their son, Roger, was born in Milwaukee in 1931.

Due to the Depression, Willard lost his job and the couple moved back to the farm, joining Willard’s father, James on the farm in Fairfield Township, east of Maquoketa. Their daughter, Nancy was born in Maquoketa in 1936.

Eloise and Willard farmed together until his unexpected death on October 7, 1952. She then continued farming in partnership with her son, Roger. She also did substitute teaching in Spragueville and Goose Lake.

She remained in her home until she moved to Clover Ridge in Maquoketa in 2008.

She was a member of the Maquoketa Methodist Church, Esther Circle, Farm Bureau Women and Eastern Star. For many years, she served as a leader of the Real Farmers Daughters 4-H Club.

Survivors include her son, Roger Tabor Stewart (Jennie) of Preston, and daughter, Nancy Jo Stewart Moore of Maquoketa; grandchildren, Deborah Stewart Bowman (Michael) of Monticello, IA., Michael Roger Stewart (Teresa) of Minnetonka, MN., Thomas Willard Stewart (Linda) of Preston, Kenneth John Moore (Julie) of Maquoketa, Steven Joe Moore (Diana) of Maquoketa, Kathleen (Kathy) Moore Countryman (Curt) of Sycamore, IL., and Sally Moore Fuglsang (Kent) of rural Baldwin; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard; her parents; her son-in-law, John (Jake) Moore; two brothers, Howard Tabor and Clifford Tabor; and two sisters, Muriel Tabor Gray and Dorothy Tabor Werden.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Hospice of Jackson County, First United Methodist Church, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
