Fireworks show on tap during Enid’s football game

By Bridget Nash Staff Writer

It’s a 21-year-old tradition and Enid’s residents are encouraged to attend the extravaganza.

Enid High School’s final football game, against Tulsa Union, will be at home tonight and, as is tradition, a fireworks show will be displayed at halftime in honor of this year’s senior class. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.

“It’s an excellent show,” said Enid athletic director Bill Mayberry. “It’s a Fourth-of-July-style show.”

The fireworks show has been a donation each year by Jim Burnett and Western Enterprises.

“When it started, it was probably back when my oldest son was playing football for Enid High,” Burnett said.” It was just kind of a lark.”

More than 20 years later, the tradition continues.

“It’s tradition, and it’s a great thing to do for my hometown,” he said.

“It’s impossible to figure up the dollar value over the years that (the Burnetts) have given us,” Mayberry said. “We just appreciate them and the continuous donations and generosity.”

Burnett said he doesn’t know how long the tradition will continue, but he has no immediate plans to bring it to an end.

“If I retire, it will be up to my kids to go ahead and sustain it,” he said.

In the meantime, Enid’s residents are looking forward to gazing into the sky to see a commemoration of yet another EHS football season.

“I know people come to the game just to see the fireworks,” Mayberry said.
