EHS looks to break Union hex
By Mark Rountree, Sports Editor
The Enid Plainsmen snapped one long losing streak earlier this season.
After 14 straight losses to Stillwater, the Plainsmen finally prevailed 35-12 in Week 5.
Tonight, the Plainsmen will be trying to snap another long losing skid when they host second-ranked Tulsa Union at D. Bruce Selby Stadium in the regular-season finale.
The defending state champion Redskins (8-1 overall, 6-0 in District 6A-4) have beaten the Plainsmen 13 straight times, and many of the games were blowouts.
In fact, most of the losses in the losing streak closely resembled last year’s 40-6 loss in which the Big Blue was dominated from the outset.
The Plainsmen (6-3 overall, 4-2 in District 6A-4) could send shock waves through the high school ranks with an upset tonight.
“This is a great opportunity against the kind of opponent you don’t get every week,’’ said Enid coach Tommy Parker. “Every dog has his day. Anybody can be beat on a given night. It can be done. Obviously, you have to have a great effort.
“I know we will compete every down. The biggest thing playing Union or Jenks, you can’t fear them. You have to attack them.
“I know one thing. This bunch has got a little chip on their shoulder and they play that way. There is no question in my mind that we will compete for four quarters.’’
Tonight’s results will finalize postseason playoff berths. The Plainsmen are in solid position to lock up the fourth-place position, and could move into third place. The playoffs begin next Friday.
The Plainsmen have played well at home this season, rolling up a 4-0 record at Selby Stadium.
Jonathan Burton returned to action last week after sitting out one game with a leg injury. Burton scored three touchdowns in a blowout win over Ponca City and now has rushed for 1,161 yards and scored 12 touchdowns.
Burton has moved into the program’s top 10 in seven offensive categories.
Alex Patterson went 9-for-9 in the second half and improved his season totals. The junior left-hander now is 70-for-135 for 1,070 yards with 11 touchdowns and three interceptions.
Patterson currently ranks as No. 1 in school history for completion percentage in a season (59.8 percent).
Enid’s run defense has been impressive. Through nine games, opponents have rushed for just 849 yards, an average of 94 yards per game. Enid’s run defense is the best since the 1991 season.
After losing to top-ranked Jenks 27-25 in Week 2, the Redskins have cruised through the rest of the season. Union’s closest game since that loss was a 23-point win at Yukon in Week 6.
Game notes: The Plainsmen have been a fast-starting team all year, outscoring opponents 79-13 in the opening quarter this year. ... Enid is plus-12 in turnover margin. ...There will be a fireworks show at halftime of tonight’s game. ... Enid’s seniors will be recognized before the game. ... Enid kicker Matt Blakley is 28-for-28 on conversion kicks this season. ... Former Oklahoma Sooners radio announcer John Brooks is the new play-by-play man for the Union Redskins on 97.1 FM.
