Big Blue to meet B. Arrow, Lancaster
The winningest coach in Enid High School football history will try to beat his former team on Friday in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.
Ron Lancaster, who coached the Plainsmen from 1981-90, will lead his Broken Arrow Tigers into the opening-round game at Memorial Stadium.
Lancaster won more games at Enid (78) than any coach in school history and led the Plainsmen to the 1983 state championship.
Former EHS head coach Craig Simmons, who coached the Plainsmen from 1991-98, is an assistant coach at Broken Arrow.
The Tigers finished the regular season 8-2 overall and in second place in District 6A-3.
Enid finished at 6-4 and placed third in District 6A-4.
Enid and Broken Arrow have faced five common opponents this season.
Against Tulsa Union, Enid lost 31-6 in Week 10 and BA lost 17-6 in Week 1.
Against Owasso, Enid lost 19-14 and BA won 28-0.
Against Sapulpa, Enid won 22-3 and BA won 52-7.
Against Sand Springs, Enid won 28-14 and BA won 49-21.
And against Bartlesville, Enid lost 21-17 and BA won 45-28.
In the career series against Broken Arrow, Enid has a 4-5 record. The most recent meeting was in 2007 when Enid lost 42-17.
Oklahoma Bible Acad-emy will see a familiar face when the Trojans host their first-ever playoff game Friday.
OBA (9-1) will host Oklahoma Christian School (8-2), whose headmaster, Dallas Caldwell, was a coach and administrator at the Enid school.
The Saints, losers only to No. 6 Cashion and No. 8 Watonga, clinched third Friday with a 55-7 rout of Luther. OCS has been ranked for much of the season. OBA was No. 7 in this week’s Associated Press poll.
The winner will face the Maysville at Cordell winner next week.
Here’s a capsule look at the rest of the first-round matches involving area teams.
Class 2A
Lexington (8-2) at Kingfisher (8-2) — Kingfisher is in the playoffs for the 10th straight year. The Yellowjackets have won nine straight first-round games. Lexington finished third in 2A-2, thanks to district champion Jones having to forfeit five games. Kingfisher clinched second in 2A-1 with a 27-0 win over Newkirk Friday. The winner plays the Atoka at Bridge Creek winner next week.
Class A
Luther (5-5) at Hennessey (10-0) — Luther was fourth in District A-2 after losing to OCS Friday. Hennessey completed its second perfect regular season in three years with a 37-3 rout of Turpin Friday. The Eagles enter the playoffs ranked No. 3 in Class A. The winner plays the Healdton at Carnegie winner next week.
Okeene (8-2) at Watonga (8-2) — This is perhaps the best first-round matchup. Okeene is ranked No. 8 in Class A and Watonga is ranked No. 9. The Whippets are in the playoffs for the eighth straight year. They have won five straight first-round games, including a 43-8 rout of the Eagles last season. Watonga’s eight wins are the most by an Eagles team since 2000 (8-3). The winner plays the Mangum at Ringling winner next week.
Texhoma (7-3) at Cashion (10-0) — Cashion will try to join Morrison as teams who went from 8-man to a Class A state championship. Cashion finished an undefeated season Friday by beating Minco 36-12. Texhoma’s three losses have come against top 10 teams — No. 3 Hennessey, No. 7 OBA and No. 8 Okeene. The winner plays the Hollis at Velma-Alma winner next week.
Class B
Allen (7-3) at Garber (10-0) — Allen knocked Fox out of the playoff picture 14-6 to take fourth place in District B-2. Defending state champion Garber is riding a 24-game winning streak. The Wolverines beat Medford 52-6 Friday. The winner plays the Kiefer at Gans winner next week.
Alex (7-3) at Canton (9-1) — Canton, ranked No. 3 in Class B, is making back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since 1983-84. Alex tied Paoli for second place in District B-2 but Caddo won the head-to-meeting 42-30. Alex has won three straight first-round games to B-1 opponents — Ringwood, 46-0, 2008; Pioneer, 44-40, 2006 and Pioneer, 49-0, 2005. The winner plays the Weleetka at Porter winner next week.
Laverne (6-4) at Caddo (8-2) — Laverne, the defending state runner-up, is in the playoffs for the fourth straight year. Caddo has won seven straight after opening the season 1-2, including losses to Ryan and Fox. The winner plays the Copan at Davenport winner next week.
Pond Creek-Hunter (6-4) at Ryan (10-0) — Ryan is ranked No. 2 in Class B and completed an undefeated regular season with a 46-0 win over Central High. The Panthers are in the playoffs for the eighth season this decade. Pond Creek-Hunter can take heart in the fact B-1 has swept B-2 the last two seasons in the playoffs. The winner plays the Oaks at Depew winner next week.
Class C
Thackerville (5-5) at Shattuck (10-0) — Bad news for Thackerville — the Wildcats go into the playoffs with four straight losses. The Indians go into the playoffs with 92 straight wins after beating Buffalo 52-6 Friday. The winner plays the DCLA at Midway winner next week.
Victory Life (5-4) at Forgan (5-5) — Forgan took second on Arkansas Plan points in District C-1 after a 32-22 win over Boise City. Victory Life had the tiebreaker over Thackerville for third place in District C-2. The winner plays the Covington-Douglas at Maud winner next week.
Boise City (8-2) at Tipton (8-2) — The visiting Wildcats are in the playoffs for the third straight year. Tipton is coming off a 30-8 win over Thackerville. The winner plays the Claremore Christian at Timberlake winner next week.
Waynoka (7-2) at Temple (9-1) — Waynoka is in the playoffs for the third straight year. The Railroaders are looking to avenge last year’s 32-30 loss to Temple. The Tigers, ranked No. 4 in Class C, won nine straight after an opening 60-22 loss to Ryan. The winner plays the Sasakwa at Seiling winner next week.
Claremore Christian (5-4) at Timberlake (10-0) — The Tigers completed their second straight perfect regular season with a 56-22 win over DCLA. Timberlake, ranked No. 2 in Class C, is making its fourth straight playoff trip. Claremore Christian is making its second-ever trip, having lost to Covington-Douglas 46-0 last season. The winner plays the Boise City at Tipton winner next week.
Sasakwa (8-2) at Seiling (9-1) — Seiling is making its third straight playoff trip. Sasakwa lost to Timberlake 54-0 in the first round last season. The Wildcats, ranked No. 3 in Class C, have lost only to Timberlake. The winner plays the Waynoka at Temple winner next week.
Deer Creek-Lamont (8-2) at Midway (6-4) — DCLA was third in District C-3 after a 56-22 loss to Timberlake Friday. The Eagles are in the playoffs for the fourth time in the last five years. DCLA has beaten Midway the last two years in the first round — 52-8 and 54-20. The winner plays the Thackerville at Shattuck winner next week.
Covington-Douglas (6-4) at Maud (10-0) — Maud defeated Bluejacket 54-6 to complete an undefeated season. They are ranked No. 5 in Class C. Covington-Douglas’ four losses came against teams with a combined 37-3 record, including Garber, No. 1, Class B; Timberlake, No. 2, Class C and Seiling, No. 3, Class C. The Wildcats are in the playoffs for the sixth straight year. They have won four straight first-round games. District C-3 swept District C-4 last year. The winner plays the Victory Life at Forgan winner.
