‘Clean Out Your Medicine Cabinet’ event is Sept. 11

By Samantha Pidde
Herald Staff Writer

CLINTON — During the Monday meeting of the Clinton County Board of Supervisors, Alan Green from Seniors vs. Crime and Kristin Huisenga of the Clinton Substance Abuse Council reminded the board that it is once again time for people to clean out their medicine cabinets.

This will be the second year for the “Clean Out Your Medicine Cabinet” event. This year the program, held on Sept. 11, will be expanding from two locations to four. Last year Clinton and DeWitt hosted the program. This year Lost Nation and Camanche will join in.

Huisenga said disposing of old medications properly is important for several reasons. She stated that some people can get confused and take improper medication if old medication is still present. She said some teenagers and adults will abuse prescription medications. Also, improper disposal may pollute waterways and groundwater.

People wishing to dispose of medication can drop it off between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. Drop-off sites include the Camanche Police Department, 819 S. Washington Blvd,, Camanche; the DeWitt REC building, 1505 Sixth Ave., DeWitt; Alliant Energy Field, 537 Ballpark Drive; and Sacred Heart Church, 903 Main St., Lost Nation. Those bringing in old medications to the drop-off sites will receive a free pillbox.

Huisenga encouraged people to come out and turn in any expired medication. She said even non-prescription medication, such as old cough medicine, can be turned in. Anyone with questions about the event can contact Huisenga at 241-4371 or e-mail her at Kristin@csaciowa.org.
