Nominations sought for award
CLINTON — The 22nd community-wide celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at Ashford University.
As part of the celebration, the annual MLK Peace and Justice Award will be presented. This award goes to a member of the community that shares King’s vision, whether displaying those traits visibly or behind the scenes. Prior recipients of the award are the Sisters of Saint Francis, Vinson Jetter, former Mayor LaMetta Wynn, YWCA Clinton, Maudi Walton, Tiffany Harris and Brian Guy.
Individuals or groups wishing to nominate an individual or organization for the eighth annual MLK Peace and Justice Award may do so by calling the YWCA and requesting a nomination form. Forms may also be picked up at the YWCA front desk, 317 Seventh Ave. South. Nominations must be submitted by Dec. 5. For more information, contact Shannon Sander-Welzien at 242-2110.
Featured at the 2010 celebration will be performance artist and poetic storyteller Shellie Moore Guy. Guy will present “Bound for Glory,” a tribute to Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad and “A King’s Legacy,” celebrating the life, accomplishments and legacy of King, Jr.
The MLK Celebration committee consists of representatives of Clinton Community College, YWCA, Ashford University, Bethel AME Church, Second Baptist Church, New Directions as well as interested citizens. Members are John Bonte, Judy Doughty, Maudi Walton, Ruth Boden, Theresa Judge OSF, Jack Pringle, the Rev. Nathaneal Johnson, the Rev. Van Flowers, Lydia Halbach, Leslie McCreery, Wanda Wyatt-Hardwick, Gary Herrity, Mardell Mommsen, Richard Basden, Mohammad Asaadi, Liza Destafano, Alexis Turner, Waunita Sullivan, Laura LeRoux and Sander-Welzien.
