Summer fun abounds in Camanche

CAMANCHE — Kids of all ages found solace from the heat at a special cool-off event at the Camanche library on Tuesday.

The Camanche Fire Department provided a refreshing hose on the library’s front lawn to keep the children cool and entertained.

“We figured it was a great time to have an event like this,” Library Director Beth Thilmany said. “With the weather being so hot, it’s the perfect time.”

The fire department hosts several similar events during the summer for different groups throughout the community, but this is the first time the library has hosted such an event.

Many of the kids in attendance participated in the summer reading program, which just wrapped up last week. Readers celebrated their achievements and completion of the program with a pool party and again at the sprinkler event.

In addition to the summer reading program, the library offers a wide array of events for children, adults and family year-round.

Ongoing and recurring events include children’s story and craft time, family movie nights and book discussions. With the summer coming to a close and children going back to school, August tends to be a slower month for events, according to Thilmany.

“Things slow down in August, but it gives us, the librarians, some time to catch up on other things,” Thilmany said. “And then things pick up again in September.”

With Camanche Days approaching, the library will host its Friends of the Library annual used book sale and bake sale. It will be held at the Camanche Masonic Lodge, 220 Ninth Ave., on Aug. 10 and 11 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale features a wide selection of children’s and adult hardbound and paperback books along with magazines, puzzles, movies and more.

On Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m., there is a buck-a-bag sale, where shoppers can fill as many bags with book sale items as they wish for $1 per bag. A variety of delicious cookies, breads, bars and pies will also be for sale.  

Other events for the month of August include children story and craft time on Aug. 1, 8 and 15 at 11:15 a.m., family movie night featuring, “The Lorax” on Aug. 17 at 7 p.m., movie night featuring “The Hunger Games,” on Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. and a book discussion on “Strength and What Remains,” by Tracy Kidder on Aug. 29 at 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
