CLINTON — Aug. 19

• From 3 to 5 p.m. join the Sisters of Humility for a spirit-filled afternoon at Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat, 2664 145th Ave., near Wheatland.

The Spirit of the Prairie event will feature locally raised and prepared food, locally made wines and beers, and local entertainment in the beautiful Iowa countryside. All proceeds will benefit the Prairie Retreat ministries. Tours of the retreat center and the grounds will be conducted throughout the afternoon. Guests will depart feeling relaxed, renewed and ready to return.

Cost is $35 per person.

Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat, a ministry of the Sisters of Humility, is located in rural east central Iowa on 200 acres of native grass prairie woodland along the Wapsipinicon River.

The Prairie Retreat provides hospitality and service in a sacred space of peace and beauty that promotes respect for all creation in the tradition of the Sisters of Humility.

• Clinton County Republicans will hold a Burger Blast from 4:30 - 6:30 in the Agricultural Center at the Clinton County Fair Grounds in DeWitt.  Featured speakers will be Brian Kennedy, Iowa Chairman of Romney for President;  Representative Steve Olson, H.D. 97;  Andrew Naeve, candidate for S. D. 48;  and Tom Determann, candidate for Clinton County Supervisor. Tickets for the event are $10 each.  Children ages 5 to 10 are $5, and younger than age 5 are free. Tickets may be purchased from elected officials, central committee members, or by calling Jane at (563) 674-4652, Edith at 243-7751 or Carolyn at 243-1193.

Checks for tickets may be sent to Clinton County Republican Central Committee, Box 455, Clinton, IA 52733-0455.  Reservations are requested by Aug. 17.

• Sawmill Museum, Preserving the Harvest, 1–2 p.m; The Sawmill Museum, 2231 Grant St., Clinton,  is hosting a workshop about ways to can, dry and freeze your garden crop from Iowa Extension Service Specialist Vera Stokes. Learn the up-to-date techniques to preserve your harvest and enjoy the bounty for months to come. For more information call 242-0343.

• Bon Voyage party for the “Exploring Trees” exhibit, 1 1 a.m. – 4 p.m. It’s the last day for the “Exploring Trees Inside and Out” exhibit from the Arbor Day Foundation. The sawmill will host a party to celebrate this exhibit. Bring a non-perishable food item donation for a $2 discount to the Sawmill Museum, 2231 Grant St., Clinton.
