• A celebration of German music from the 19th century is on the program for Clinton Symphony Orchestra this weekend. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. in the Vernon Cook Theater at Clinton High School.

The concert marks the end of the Symphony’s 59th indoor concert season, and conductor Brian Dollinger’s sixth season with the orchestra. Composers represented are Ludwig van Beethoven, Richard Wagner and Robert Schumann.

“Each work on this performance has its own story to tell,” Dollinger said. “In fact, the word ‘story’ can be taken quite literally for much of the performance. Whether we are talking about the Shakespearean tragedy Coriolanus, or the birthday gift that Richard Wagner gave to his wife Cosima, stories are woven throughout.”

The major work of the evening will be Schumann’s Rhenish Symphony, and portrays his impressions of scenes along the Rhine River, including a movement dedicated to the recently completed cathedral at Cologne. Although the symphony is numbered “Three,” it was actually the last of the composer’s four symphonies to be completed.
