Things to do

(Continued)

Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll was first played by an ensemble arranged on a staircase outside the couple’s door as his wife, Cosima, awakened on her birthday, a Christmas morning, following the birth of their child Siegfried. The piece has proven to be one of the few non-operatic works by Wagner to have a regular concert presence.

The Coriolan Overture was composed by Beethoven as introductory music to a drama of questionable worth by Joseph von Collin, based on the Shakespearean tragedy Coriolanus. It has survived the failure of the drama and has taken its place in the concert repertoire.

Full program notes by the Symphony’s annotator, William H. Driver, are available on the website at www.clintonsymphony.org.

Advance tickets may be purchased at Wagner Pharmacy on North Second Street in Clinton, Fitzgerald Pharmacy in Morrison, Ill., and Grummert’s Hardware in Sterling, Ill. Adult admission is $15, and high school and college student tickets are $5. Students through eighth grade are admitted free.

Remaining events of the Symphony’s season are the annual benefit dinner and auction on Friday, May 31, and a free outdoor Pops Concert in Clinton’s Riverview Park on June 2.

• Rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse and domestic violence are often labeled “crimes of silence” because of low reporting rates and social discomfort with their public discussion. To address the epidemic of sexual violence, the YWCA Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Resource Center is inviting community members to a “Take Back the Night” March and Rally at 6:30 pm. Sponsored by the Ashford University Student Government Association, the event will be held on the Ashford University Campus and is free to the community.

The Take Back the Night March will be held at Ashford University beginning at 6:30 p.m. Marchers will gather in the Ashford University Student Center for short march through the campus. The TBTN Rally and Program will follow at 7 p.m. in the Ashford Student Center. Keynote speaker Maggie Tinsman will speak on the global and local problems of human trafficking. A former Iowa State Senator of 18 years, Tinsman is the founder of “Breaking Traffic,” an organization dedicated to eradicating sex trafficking in Iowa and Illinois.
