Dog Days Of Summer

FULTON, Ill. — The dog days of summer were in full swing Thursday in Fulton as the second installment of Fulton Summer Nights went off without a hitch.

As family and friends of all ages joined the community celebration, themed “The Dog Days of Summer,” they were greeted by an array of canine companions.

First Presbyterian Church of Fulton helped sponsor the night’s activities and the church’s representative Mary Buikema said it was a great night for the group.

“Just by looking at people you call tell they’re having a great time,” she said. “It’s just a great night to be out on the town.”

Weather played a big role in the night’s success as well a slew of carnival games, prizes, the River City Municipal Band playing in the background, golf cart rides along Fulton’s riverfront and summertime grill food served up by the Boy Scouts.

But the real stars of the show were the four-legged friends who kept the guests smiling.

Three CERT Therapy Outreach dogs laid in the grass just south of the windmill as people of all ages came up to give them some affection as a young collie showed off its skills on the dog agility course.

“We picked the dog days of summer theme because the library’s summer reading program is ‘Paws to Reading,’” Buikema said. “We just thought it was a good fit for what we wanted to do.”

As the night’s other sponsor, the Schmaling Public Library took advantage of the night by spreading the word about its summer program and encouraging people to take part.

Though the night was deemed a success by the organizers, attendance numbers were not what is typically seen during the Fulton Summer Nights event.

And while Buikema didn’t have a reason why the evening didn’t generate more interest, she said the happiness of the people who did take part in the event was all that mattered.

“People are listening to the band. They’re enjoying the games,” she said. “They seem to be enjoying themselves so that’s what’s important.”
