Clinton area holiday happenings

CLINTON — Symphony of Lights to begin Thursday

CLINTON — Eagle Point Park will be aglow with the Symphony of Lights display starting on Thanksgiving. The light display will be up and running throughout the holiday season through Dec. 30 with numerous special events in between.

Symphony of Lights runs 6 to 9 p.m. and costs $7 per car up to 10 people and $2 per person for vehicles of more than 10 people. A family walk will be held on November 21 from 6 to 9 p.m., kicking off the Symphony of Lights season. This is the only opportunity to enjoy the enchanting 1.1 mile view of the displays on foot and at a leisurely pace.  Strollers are welcome, but please leave your pets at home. Free refreshments will be available in the Lodge.

Cost for adult registration is $15 and includes a long sleeve T-shirt. The cost for children’s registration (ages 6-12) is $5 and does not include a T-shirt. Children under age of 6 are free.

 Due to limited parking within the park, participants are asked to park at the Lyons Train Depot at 56 25th Ave. North, and use the shuttle bus service to get to the park. Buses will run from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Only vehicles with handicap permits will be allowed within the park.

 On Nov. 24 runners can take in the unique displays during the 5K run at 4 p.m.

The gates open at 2:30 p.m. and the course will be entirely within Eagle Point Park on approximately two miles of rolling paved park roads.

The cost for registration is $15 and includes a long-sleeve T-shirt.  

Other events include a free craft show  from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 1 and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 2. Mr. and Mrs. Claus will visit Dec. 2, 9 and 16 during operational hours. Jingle Bell Jam will take place on Dec. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. Cost is $10 per person to enter Eagle Point Park and it includes food tastings, drive through Symphony of Lights, holiday shopping in a festive atmosphere and hosted refreshments.

Clinton Symphony plans concert

CLINTON — The Clinton Symphony Orchestra will host a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Vernon Cook Theater at Clinton High School. Holidays are a time for friends and music; Clinton Symphony Orchestra will be joined by RiverChor in this celebration of the season. Plan a gathering of friends, family and co-workers. Groups of eight or more receive special ticket pricing.

Phone calls from Santa

CLINTON — Santa Claus will call children ages 3 through second grade on Dec. 5 and 6.  If children would like to receive a phone call from Santa, parents should fill out a form at the Ericksen Community Center, 1401 11th Ave. North, by Nov. 26.

Forms also will be available at local schools. For more information, contact the administrative center at 243-1260.

Curtis Mansion open house set for Dec. 9

CLINTON —  The annual Christmas Open House at the George Curtis Mansion will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at 420 Fifth Ave. South, sponsored by the Clinton Women’s Club.

There will be no charge to view the first floor of the home but a donation can be made in the dining room where cookies, punch and coffee will be available. The complete tour of the three floors by a tour guide will be $6 per person.

Nuts and chocolate covered nuts will again be for sale on the first floor. This is the annual fundraiser for the club and they have 29 varieties for sale that are from $6 per bag and up.

A few dates are still available to rent the mansion for Christmas parties. For further information call 249-5861.

Art association hosts show

CLINTON — The Clinton Art Association's Annual Membership Show is now on display at the River Arts Center through Dec. 23. The public is welcome to visit the center at 229 Fifth Ave. South, Clinton,. The center is operated by CAA members and friends on a volunteer basis.

During the year  the center features seven exhibits by area artists, ending with a members' exhibit.  

New art is usually featured, but this year, in honor of the CAA's 50th Anniversary, artists are also allowed to show favorites they have created in past years.  About 30 artists are featured in the gallery and gift shop showcasing paintings, photography, collage, glass, pottery, jewelry, and many other one-of-a-kind creations. The River Arts Center is excited to host a tour by Fran Riley of KWQC-TV 6 later this month to be viewed on Nov. 29.  Watch to find out more about our gallery, gift shop, theater, clay studio, classes, permanent art collection and Rainbow Pottery. The center is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1-4 p.m.  Rainbow is open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4 p.m.  The center also is  available for parties, meetings and tours by calling 243-3300.

Immaculate Conception will have bake sale

FULTON, Ill. — With the holidays fast approaching, you may find yourself short of time for baking. Stop by Immaculate Conception Parish Hall at 1111 Seventh St. in Fulton for a bake sale. You can choose from a variety of homemade baked goods. This is a fundraiser for the Immaculate Conception Auxiliary.

The sale will be Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, December 2 from 9 a.m. to noon. Hope to see you there!

Trinity to hold Christmas for Kids

CLINTON — Christmas for Kids will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 656 Fifth Ave. South, Clinton, on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.  

Registration begins at 8:45.  Children age 4 through fifth grade are invited to attend.  Bible lessons, videos, crafts and music will reflect the theme "From Heaven Above to Earth I Come."  Snacks and a pizza lunch will be provided.

Our Lady of the Prairie to host event

WHEATLAND — At 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, there will be a Taize Vigil Service at Our Lady of the Prairie. Taize is an ecumenical movement, drawing Christians of all denominations together in unified prayer. Friends of the Prairie and churches of all faith traditions in the area are being invited to participate. Future services will be held the first Sunday of each month at 5 p.m followed by a soup supper.
