CCC offers classes at Maquoketa sites

---- — CLINTON — The Clinton Community College Maquoketa Center is hosting a variety of classes during the coming months.

• Welding & Technology, Fundamentals: Tuesdays, Thursdays Sept. 10 - Oct. 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Maquoketa High School Welding Lab, Cost: $300. Class #129253.

This class is designed to cover the fundamentals of welding. Class includes hands-on instruction and practice in gas cutting and welding, arc welding in various positions and basic MIG welding. Other topics include safe use of welding equipment and machinery, abrasive cut-off saws, shears, grinders and various tools common to the welding field. Participants will receive 36 training hours for this course.

• Manufacturing Fundamentals: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 10 to Nov. 14 - from 4:30-8:30 p.m. Maquoketa High School Welding Lab. Cost: $750. Class #129265

This course includes studies in the areas of Plant Safety, Math for Manufacturing Technologies, Blueprint Reading and Machine Shop Measuring. This class helps students develop the skills to handle a variety of basic tasks within the manufacturing environment.

• Indian Style Market Basket: Thursday, Sept. 12 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the CCC Maquoketa Center. Cost: $15. Class #129251

This small basket is a reproduction of a larger Indian lunch tote. It features a wrapped, self-made handle and cross-stitch overlays. In this class you will be taught all the basics for weaving a market-style basket. A materials fee of $12 is payable to the instructor at time of class.

• Beginning Computers/Seniors: Wednesdays, Sept. 18 to Oct. 9 from 9 to 11 a.m. at CCC Maquoketa Center. Cost: $49. Class #129258.

Are you just beginning to use computers? This class is for you. Learn the basics to operate this machine that is fast becoming a necessity in today’s modern life. Get a taste of Windows XP, the database and Internet, through hands-on experience in the computer lab. Book is included in the fee.

• Women, Land & Legacy: Third Thursday each month, Sept. 19, Oct. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. CCC Maquoketa Center. There is no cost. No pre-registration is necessary.

The Women, Land, and Legacy project is a statewide outreach effort on behalf of the USDA State Outreach Council. The SOC includes USDA agencies, state and local agencies/organizations, nonprofit organizations, and faith-based organizations. The goal of the SOC is to gather information about program and outreach needs of under-served groups, ways to address these needs, barriers to participation in USDA programs and effective dissemination of information to these groups. Outreach to women involved with agriculture in Iowa has been identified as a need, thus the Women, Land, and Legacy project.

• Mo-ped Riding Instruction: Saturday, Sept. 28, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at CCC Maquoketa Center. Cost is $60. Class #116505.

This six-hour mo-ped riding instruction class is for anyone who wants to ride a mo-ped. The class will include six hours of classroom instruction — no riding — and is designed to teach the student how to reduce the risks that occur when operating a mo-ped in traffic. This class is approved by the Iowa Department of Transportation and Iowa Department of Education. You also must be 14 years of age, or within 30 days, to take this class.

• iPad Basics: Saturday, Sept. 28, 9 a.m. to noon; CCC Maquoketa Center. Cost: $39. Class #129256.

No prerequisite. Bring your iPad to this hands-on course and learn how to get the most from your new device. Explore basic functions, navigation and settings, learn how to work with your iTunes account, how to find and use the AppStore and more. In addition to your iPad, bring your email addresses, any current Apple IDs and their passwords.

• Forklift Operators Training: Saturday, Sept. 28, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Maquoketa High School Welding Lab. Class fee is $75. Class # 129255.

This course is designed to meet the training requirements for OSHA standard 29 1910.178. Training topics include mechanics, inspection and maintenance of forklifts; ANSI driving procedures; lift operation; and special operating rules. This course is the same as Forklift Safety, but also includes driving module that allows participants to operate a forklift.

Digital Photography, An Introduction: Thursdays, Oct. 3 to 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at CCC Maquoketa Center. Cost is $35. Class #129259.

Explore the endless possibilities of digital photography. This course offers an introduction to digital photography and how to use your digital camera to the fullest extent. Optimize your shots by learning how to utilize your camera’s different functions and settings. Learn formal elements of photography such as: different aspects of focus, lighting and camera angles to enhance your images. Understand how cropping images can help attain desirable photographic aesthetics. This course will provide you with a basic knowledge of digital photography useful for photographers wanting to capture: portraits, landscapes and micro images.

Foliage Market Basket: Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the CCC Maquoketa Center. Cost is $15. Class #129252.

This is a medium-sized market basket that is woven using the beautiful colors of fall. The sides are triple twined and twilled. The rim is braided. Prior basket weaving experience is needed for this class. There is a materials fee of $25 payable to the instructor at time of class.

• Introduction to the Personal Computer: Tuesdays, Oct. 15 to 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. at CCC Maquoketa Center Computer Lab 28. Class fee is $95. Class #129257.

This course is designed for those who have never used a computer or for those who are thinking about buying a computer. Become familiar with terminology. Get a taste of the Windows operating system, the word processing program Word, and spreadsheets using Excel through hands-on experience. A great place to start if you are brand new to computing. Book is included in class fee.

Shamballa Bracelet: Monday, Oct. 21 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the CCC Maquoketa Center- Class fee is $15. Class #129264.

Learn how to make your own Shamballa bracelet in the one night of class. Supplies will be provided for two bracelets. One bracelet will be made in the class and the other to take home with you. Shamballa bracelets are made using silk rat tail cording and beads. All supplies will be provided, however, if you have a clip board please bring that along to class. There is a materials fee of $10 payable to the instructor at time of class.

• Welding & Tech, Advanced: Tuesdays and Thursdays from Oct. 22 to Nov. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. at MHS Welding Lab. Class fee is $300. Class #129254.

This program offers the additional 36 hours of class time asked for by most companies of their future employees. It is designed to cover the advanced fundamentals of welding and will also help prepare you for your career in welding. Additional hands-on experience in torch, arc and MIG welding will be covered in addition to resume and job search tips. Other topics include the advanced safe use of welding equipment and machinery, abrasive cut-off saws, grinders and various tools common to the welding field.
