School supplies, fun on tap

CLINTON — The late Vinson Jetter started the Youth for a Safe Non-Violent Community annual summer event 20 years ago as a way for local service providers and families to meet.

"He had a vision and we are still keeping that vision going," Dina White says of her late brother.

Ever since it began, the Vinson H. Jetter Community Center through the event presents school supplies, food and a variety of games and activities to area families. This year, White said the event is offering even more than before.

"This is the biggest we've ever had," White said. "We're going to have a pretty busy day."

The event, which remembers Jetter's birthday, will run from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. Saturday at Clinton Park. Supplies will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. White estimated they have at least 200 supply bags.

Children attending the celebrations will have a chance to play games, make crafts and jump in two separate bounce houses. Elite basketball quick drills training and Zumba activities also will be available. People can also register for a three-on-three basketball tournament for $5. Sign-in is at 8 a.m.

White is most excited about the various booths that have been added to the event. Businesses and organizations will set up at the park to offer services and information. This will include free computer training, free scoliosis screening, clothing and registration for free vitamins. Local historian Gary Herrity will share stories, as well.

"We want this event to be fun and safe," White said. "But we want the families and the kids to be knowledgeable about the opportunities in the community that are available and free."

White is encouraged by the amount of support the community center continues to receive from the area. In all of her years asking for donations for the event, she was only told "no" once. Part of the celebration will be spent presenting awards to those in the community who have offered their time and support.

For more information on the event, call White at (563) 212-6775 or Cynthia Williams at (563) 559-0591. Donations are being accepted.
