A walk to remember: Glow Walk draws hundreds

CLINTON — Hundreds of volunteers lit up the night sky on Friday during the city's first Anti-Bullying Glow Walk at Eagle Point Park.

People from all walks of life attended the event, which is aimed to raise awareness for bullying and suicide prevention.

Rita Walton organized the event with a team of volunteers who all expressed how overwhelmed they have been with the outpouring of support they have received from the community.

"It has been amazing," Walton said. "This is just people doing stuff for other people and it's pretty unbelievable."

More than 700 people came out to support the event and that is something volunteer and organizer Brodey Hansen never anticipated.

"It's just awesome. The impact of this is greater than I ever thought possible," Hansen said.

The event not only helped raise awareness for bullying, but it also set out to raise money for school-based services offered at Bridgeview Mental Health Center.

Hansen said that by the end of the event that the money generated through donations, the silent auction and T-shirt sales will reach at least $6,000 to contribute to the Bridgeview program.

Bridgeview representative Marcia Christiansen credited the work of Walton and her team for the amount of success the first event generated.

"I can't thank Rita and this group enough for the work they've put in to this," Christiansen said. "This is bringing the community together and bringing awareness to people that wouldn't necessarily have it."

With the success of the first year already evident to Walton and the glow walk volunteers, they are sure it is going to become a yearly event.

"We had a woman from Joliet come up and ask us if we could come organize an event down there," Hansen said. "There is obviously a need for it, so we will continue getting the message out there."
