Big crowds at Whiteside fair

Varying events keep fair-goers coming

MORRISON, Ill. — As the Whiteside County Fair finished its last day Saturday, Director of Publicity Todd Mickley hoped for a record day.

Although he did not have final numbers for turnout at the fair, Mickley thought they saw a record crowd Friday, which he attributed to both the weather and the selection of events.

“It’s just been a beautiful week,” Mickley said. “We’ve just heard a lot of positive feedback.”

Participation in the various events was steady, according to Mickley. He reported that sheep numbers increased slightly and dairy participation stayed level. Kermit Daniels said the fair was “excellent” this year, as he loaded his sheep in a trailer to take them back to Forreston, Ill.

Besides the animal events, Mickley and everyone else involved in the fair try to provide events for all ages. This year, music and a stunt show joined the fair. Saturday also featured carnival rides, a children’s peddle pull competition, a horseshoe tournament, harness races, a demolition derby and chainsaw sculpting.

“We had a good mixture of events,” Mickley said.

Sandy Kosier, of Sterling, Ill., came Saturday with her sister and her sister’s grandchildren. The group stopped in the sculpting area to watch Steven Higgins create a bear out of a large stump.

“It’s amazing what they can do,” Kosier said. On Friday, she watched all four sculptors working on pieces of their own at the same time.

Local families also came out Saturday to sign their children up for the peddle pull competition. Candace Bush, of Fenton, Ill., came with her whole family to watch her 2-year-old son compete. Afterwards, he could be seen eating the free ice cream cone he received for participating.

“We’ll stay all day,” Bush said.

While the carnival rides started up at noon and the concession carts opened, Morrison native Laura Wilson and her children, Joey and Haley, grabbed some snacks and sat down for a while. Each year the family comes, though the three could not agree whether it is for the food or the games.

“Pretty much all of it,” Wilson said.
