Clinton man wins top prize

---- — CLINTON — A Clinton man said he didn’t initially believe that his Super Crossword instant-scratch ticket was a top prize winner.

In the end, though, Michael White ended up $50,000 richer.

“I got to counting and I thought I only counted nine (words), then I recounted and it turned out to be 10,” White said. “I went back and I saw that I missed a few (letters) and that’s when it figured out to be 10.”

The 59-year-old construction worker said he had his winning ticket verified at a retailer before he started to celebrate.

White said he is working on a construction project in Cedar Rapids and purchased his scratch ticket during a recent lunch break at Casey’s in Cedar Rapids.

White claimed the 30th of 34 top prizes of $50,000 available in the Super Crossword game. He claimed his prize Thursday at the Iowa Lottery’s regional office in Cedar Rapids.

“I always wondered what it would be like to get a big one, but I never thought I’d ever get one,” he said. “I guess anything’s possible.”

White said he plans to save a majority of his lottery winnings.

Super Crossword is a $5 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in either puzzle or the complete bonus word in the play area on each ticket.

The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.69.
