The Clinton Landlords Association celebrated its 20th anniversary this year.
The Clinton Landlords Association was formed and incorporated in February 1994. Its mission was then, and remains today, to educate landlords and property managers, helping them to operate their businesses more effectively and efficiently, as well as alert them to new laws and changes in the laws governing their business. Membership requirements must be met in either of two areas: landlords must either own or manage residential rental property or vendor members must supply materials or services commonly used by the owners or managers. Landlord membership includes membership in Landlords of Iowa, Inc., a statewide organization.
The Clinton Landlords Association is a member of the Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce and meets each month with the exception of December. The locations have varied over the years, but it currently meets on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Chamber of Commerce Office at 6:30 p.m. Many of the attendees arrive early and enjoy a light lunch and social time before the meeting. Each meeting features a guest speaker relating to some aspect of the business from either a management or maintenance perspective. Some very popular speakers have included members of the Clinton Police Department, the Clinton County Sherriff’s Office, various court officers, fair housing and civil rights educators, Iowa Department of Health and lead paint officials, legislators, a legislative lobbyist, as well as vendors with products, tips, and tricks for cleaning, painting, floor care and other areas of maintenance. The Clinton Landlords Association is a member of the Gateway ImpACT coalition of the Clinton Substance Abuse Council.
In 2009 the Clinton Landlords Association hosted the annual statewide convention sponsored by the Landlords of Iowa. It is the premier educational event of the year for rental property owners and managers. This event featured two nationally known speakers, a lobbyist, experts in the legal and financial aspects of property management, and substance abuse topics. Vendors were also available to help educate participants on the latest trends and products involved in renovation and maintenance of residential property.
