Fulton elementary, middle school daily PE classes waived

FULTON, Ill. — The River Bend School Board has renewed the approval of a waiver to not require elementary and middle school students to participate in physical education classes on a daily basis.

The waiver allows for students to attend P.E. classes on a rotation with art, computer training, music and library skills classes throughout the school year.

According to school board vice president Jane Orman-Luker, the school has participated in the waiver program for more than 25 years.

“We just don’t have the facilities to provide multiple physical education classes more regularly,” Orman-Luker said.

The meeting held Monday provided an opportunity for the public to bring questions or concerns to board members, but no members of the community were in attendance.

In previous years, the school board was only required to renew the waiver every five years, but since 2010 the state of Illinois requires the renewal be made every two years.

However, since the change, the school is now only allowed three renewals. This year’s renewal will be the school’s second and when the final renewal is up, the school board is not sure what the future holds.

“We will just wait and see what happens when that time comes,” Superintendent Charles Holliday said.
