Meet your neighbor — Elizabeth Liggett

CLINTON — Growing up in a tiny Lutheran church in Montana, Elizabeth Liggett has always known she was meant for some kind of ministry.

“The church has always been my home,” Elizabeth said.

She has served as a pastor for 27 years, with the last nine years, along with husband Derek Grimmell, being in Clinton at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

One of her favorite events is the CROP Hunger Walk. At her first church, she started that congregation’s CROP Walk. Since then, she has been involved in the event at every church she has served.

“I believe in the cause,” Elizabeth said. “It’s combatting hunger and poverty and that’s one of the main things that we are about.”

Those participating in Clinton’s 31st CROP Walk, will gather at 1 p.m. Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church to walk either 1, 3 or 5 miles. Treats and refreshments will be served after the walk at Zion Lutheran. Elizabeth likes that a quarter of the funds raised will stay within the community.

“We are commanded to care about our neighbors near and far and this fulfills both,” Elizabeth said.

She didn’t always know if she could be a minister. She remembers wondering if her pastor was speaking about her when he said someone in his congregation was meant to be a minister. At the time, she did not know if that was even an option for her, as a female.

“A lot about my job is really fun,” Elizabeth said. “The message I get to share is a life-giving message.”

She enjoys the variety of duties she gets to fulfill as part of her calling. She loves to lead worship and is “overwhelmed” when she serves communion.

“They come with their whole lives here and meet God,” Elizabeth said.
