Jobless rate up

CLINTON — The unemployment rate for the city of Clinton grew to 6 percent in June, up from 5.3 percent the month prior.

According a report released by the Iowa Office of Workforce Development, the city’s June unemployment rate is down 0.6 percent from what it was in June 2012.

Of Clinton’s 13,600 member workforce, 820 are unemployed, the report shows.

The jump ends Clinton’s streak of steadily improving unemployment numbers from month to month.

In April, the city had a 5.3 percent unemployment rate, down from March when it was 5.7 percent. In February, Clinton had a 6.5 percent unemployment rate. The unemployment rate was 7 percent and 5.9 percent in January and December, respectively.

All of Iowa’s 23 largest cities saw jumps in the number of unemployed in June. Davenport and Burlington have the highest rates at 6.7 percent.

The state during the month of June remained at 4.6 percent, but was down from the June 2012 rate of 5.3 percent. Meanwhile, the U.S. unemployment rate for June was unchanged at 7.6 percent

Clinton County’s unemployment rate grew by half a percent from May to June, landing at 5.5 percent.

Jackson County also saw the number of those without jobs increase during June from 4.5 percent to 4.9 percent.
