Miss Clinton County: Keeping the crown in the family

CLINTON — Tears were shed as one sister crowned another at Saturday’s Miss Clinton County Scholarship Program Pageant.

Miss Clinton County 2012 Ashley Herrington relinquished her crown to her little sister, Brandy Herrington.

“I feel so blessed right now,” Brandy said. “Having my sister be a part of it was so special.”

Ashley was also thrilled to pass the title to her sister. She plans to share her own experiences as Miss Clinton County with her.

“I’m going to teach her everything I know,” Ashley said.

Brandy, 20, of Clinton, currently attends Wartburg College in Waverly as a pre-med major with a pyschology minor. She hopes to one day become an oncologist. Her platform, “Lifting the fallen angels — advocating for those affected by mental health disabilities”, was inspired by her own experience caring for such individuals at school.

“But working with them has opened my heart and mind to them,” she said during the question part of the competition. “They’ve touched my heart. They’ve touched my soul.”

Brandy performed “A Midnight Dream” on the piano. She received two years of tuition at Clinton Community College, a $1,500 scholarship from the Miss Clinton County Board, a $500 Clinton Jaycees Foundation scholarship and a $100 scholarship from Camanche Kiwanis.

Molly McDonnell, 17, of Clinton, was named first runner-up and given a $800 scholarship. She gave up a teen title to participate in this year’s pageant. She also received the People’s Choice award.

Alexis Schroeder, 12, of Lost Nation, became the Clinton County’s Outstanding Teen. She currently attends Calamus-Wheatland Schools, serving as student council president and receiving the President’s Award for Academics. Her platform is “Everything for kids —fighting the fight against childhood diseases.”

The first runner-up title went to 16-year-old Kennedy Walters, of Clinton. Her platform was “Suicide prevention awareness.”
