---- — CLINTON — Members of the community toured the halls of Clinton Community College while attending demonstrations during the CCC Connects Showcase on Friday.
With April being Community College Month, CCC staff wanted to hold an open house to show the college's connection to the community. Dean of Students Lisa Miller organized the event with the goal of opening up CCC to residents and creating an interest in CCC's programs.
Students, families, staff members and members of the community poked their heads into the various classrooms holding demonstrations. Miller said they wanted to utilize many of the classrooms so participants would have a chance to get a feel for the campus.
In the Science wing, Chemistry Professor John Bonte showed those in attendance how to use the department's spectrophotometer to determine how much red dye 40 is found in a soft drink mix. He took people through testing different concentrations of the dye to see how much light was absorbed before comparing it with the same test of the drink mix.
"I had no idea that machine could do all that and what it was," Jeff Minner, a CCC staff member, said.
Minner was showing Kathy Rehr around the campus and stopped to see Bonte's experiment. Bonte's students conducted similar tests on red Kool-aid, red M&M's and red Skittles.
Janet Bauer, of Clinton, brought her children to the open house. Since Bauer's daughter is in high school, they decide to check out what programs CCC offers.
Those attending the event were able to learn about continuing education, biology and microbiology, nursing programs and information technology. Film demonstrations were available in one room and student artworks were displayed in another.
Near the campus library, art student Jacob Schoenhaar dipped his brush in oil paints and created a painting. He said he wanted to show people coming in what the art program has to offer.
"I love this school. It is a good school," Schoenhaar said. He added that CCC lets a student pick what he or she wants to do instead of sticking to a curriculum.
