LOS ANGELES —
For (potentially) unknown reasons, comedian Jay Leno hand-picked one Gateway couple for his all-time best headlines segment.
“Sometimes, the combination of two people getting married creates a rather interesting phrase,” Leno said Monday night. “We tracked down a bunch of the couples. We invited them here to relive the glory of their wedding announcement.”
In between Super Bowl jokes and an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Leno celebrated one of his beloved segments by introducing ironically-named spouses at his studio in Los Angeles. In between the Jaeger-Meister and Annis-Biter couples were Whiteside County natives Justin Schaver and Diane Bush-Schaver.
“We love these folks - it’s the Schaver-Bush wedding,” Leno remarked, inducing laughter and applause from his audience. Like the other couples, the Schavers walked through a makeshift altar holding hands as Leno flipped through their original wedding announcement that ran through local newspapers.
Diane Schaver has family in Fulton, Ill. and Justin Schaver originates from Morrison, Ill.
Leno is on a farewell tour with this week marking his final as a late-night talk show host. Monday’s “Headlines” segment served as his last, he said. On Feb. 17, Fallon will take over Leno’s duties on the “Tonight Show.”
